A Beloit man whose sentence in the Rock County Jail diversion program tiffany and co was supposed to begin at 8 a.m. Sunday was instead arrested in connection with the 3:15 a.m. shooting of a Janesville man.

Beloit police Sunday arrested Marquan B. Barnes, 20, of 1870 Church St., Beloit, at the Rock County Jail on charges of first- degree reckless injury and felony possession of a firearm.

Police accused Barnes of shooting Cleveland Turner, 30, of 353 Rockport Road, Janesville. Turner was shot twice in the legs, but the wounds were not life threatening, Beloit Police Capt. William Tyler said Tuesday.

Turner was treated and released at Beloit Memorial Hospital.

The incident took place near Porter and Hull avenues.

“It was an outdoor altercation from a drug transaction that went awry,” Tyler said.

Barnes had been sentenced to jail earlier on a conviction of possession of marijuana silver pendants and driving after license revocation. His sentence was to begin Sunday.

Rock County Jail diversion Sgt. John Cowan this morning confirmed that Barnes had been accepted into the diversion program. He was wearing a bracelet at the time of the shooting, but the bracelet had not been activated.

Five hours after the shooting, Barnes reported to the jail to have his bracelet activated. While jail officials were activating the bracelet, Beloit police called and said they wanted to question Barnes.

He later was arrested at the jail in connection with the shooting.

Barnes’ planned diversion privileges were revoked, and he was held at Rock silver earrings County Jail, Cowan said.
