Red stones enhance two eye-catching pins destined for the fundraiser.

If your jewelry box is overflowing, some of the pieces you no longer wear could find a new home Thursday during Baubles, Bangles and Beads, tiffany earrings clearance, a jewelry swap/fundraiser for the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Guild.

The event, buy tiffany bracelets, the first of its kind for the guild, serves a triple purpose. Primarily, it will raise money for educational programs for the Youth Orchestras, but young women at Girls Inc. also will benefit. And those attending get the chance to bring home new-to-you pieces to add to their personal collections.

Admission is $25 plus at least one quality piece of costume jewelry from home (bring more if you like). Organizers stress the importance of quality costume jewelry. No junk please, said publicity co-chairwoman Suzanne Ahn.

The first item you bring will be donated to Girls Inc.

"They can use the jewelry as Christmas gifts for their mentors who have become very special in their lives," Ahn said.

For every other item you bring, watches, you can take home half that amount from other donated jewelry. For instance, if you bring four items, you can take home two.

"It’s an opportunity for other people to pick up gifts for other people or to add to their own collections, discount tiffany Pendants," Ahn added. "This was an idea for something fun and different to do."

Reservations are advised so organizers can get a head count of how many to expect, bangles, as wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served on the mezzanine level at Greenlife Grocery.

"And you can do your grocery shopping on the way out," Ahn said.

If you go

–What: Baubles, Bangles and Beads jewelry swap.

–When: 4-7 p.m. Thursday.

Let me tell you about the North Luangwa valley, Zambia’s best-kept secret. Mention Zambia in safari-going circles and the cognoscenti wax merrily on about the charms of the South Luangwa valley, how its legendary guides Norman Carr (now dead), Phil Berry and Robin Pope, both still very much with us, have made it the world-famous home of the walking safari.

But speak to those who live there, tiffany bracelets sale, who know every corner of the vast and varied country, and they’ll tell you that northern Zambia is the place to go. And because they told me it was the place to go,bangles, I went. I found there the Africa that one dreams of in the cold winter nights back home, an Africa that today is disappearing fast, that is vast and wild, where designer camps and their fancy cushions have yet to arrive. It’s a raw and empty wilderness and these days that is something to be savoured. In 4,600 sq km of the North Luangwa National Park there are just three small and simple, bracelets, rustic bush camps with no more than 28 beds between them. They’re spread far apart so that as you sit at sunset, your feet dangling in the clear and shallow waters of the Mwaleshi river, a glass of Pommery in hand, you have the illusion that you and your little group have all Africa to yourselves. Up in the North Luangwa valley there are no cars, other than the four-by-fours owned by the guides and antipoaching guards, and it’s home to quite another sort of walking safari, one where you will see nobody else at all and you can walk wherever your guide and the fancy takes you. The game is skittish and you don’t see a lot but what you see is wild and glorious. The lions do what proper lions should always do, which is to growl and threaten and let you know that if you don’t disappear sharpish, there’ll be trouble. North Luangwa lions don’t do posing for tourists.

The only way into the park is to fly into one of the three camps and while all have their followers, for us Rod and Guz Tether’s chic and simple little camp, Kutandala, seemed quite perfect. Guz is a phenomenal cook (she trained at Ballymaloe), which whilst not strictly speaking essential turned out to be an enormous plus. But the real magic lies in the place, in its simplicity, in the sense it gave of privacy and peace, in the rustic reed and thatch cottages sitting right on the banks of the Mwaleshi river and in the river itself, where in the dry season all the animals tend to come down to drink. With Rod, a phenomenal guide who knows the Zambian bush intimately, we spent three magical days doing as we pleased – a freedom long gone in the busier, more heavily regulated parks. We walked and we walked. We came upon buffalo and lion, elephant, eland and hartebeest, wildebeest and a million thrilling birds. At night we sat under a great big mahogany tree, lanterns in the branches, Guz’s extraordinary food on the table. Kutandala is, above all, a bush experience. It’s for people who love the smell and the sound of the African bush and want to feel in and of it. If you want to tick off the big five in super-quick time, go somewhere else.

Then, if you’re there in November or December (when the fanatical seekers after rare sightings make a special pilgrimage) you should head for Kasanka, one of northern Zambia’s other extraordinary glories. You need to know that there is nowhere at all swanky to stay. Wasa lodge is Africa as it used to be, rundown and shabby but clean, comfortable and the food is perfectly fine. The point of the visit is to see one of the most remarkable wildlife phenomena the world has to offer – the regular evening migration of some five million straw-coloured fruit bats. By day they roost in the small mushitu swamp forest of Kasanka National Park,Beads necklace, often breaking the branches with their weight as so many are crowded into such a small, one-hectare forest. Every evening, absolutely predictably, some time between 6pm and 6.15pm, almost as one, they leave their daytime roosts, blackening out the dying sun, and head for the wild fruit trees where they eat all night long. You can watch it all from the Fibwe hide, deep in a giant mululu tree, overlooking the Kapabi swamps or else you can do as we did and venture out among the high papyrus grass. By day it’s a great place to look for the sitatunga, an extremely shy aquatic antelope with splayed hooves which spends its days deep in the papyrus swamps. Do whatever it takes to get Frank Willims, a Dutch-born ornithologist, as your guide – beg, cheat, bribe – he’s worth it. He brings the forest alive and knows every bird and call.

While you’re up there in northern Zambia you shouldn’t miss out on its great monument to colonial eccentricity – Shiwa Ng’andu. An extraordinary house built by a very unusual man, Sir Stewart Gore-Browne, who tried to build a vast utopian house beside an African lake, the very one where Livingstone’s dog Chitane was eaten by a crocodile. He was one of those breed of men who needed a larger canvas than Britain could ever offer. Africa beckoned – vast, untamed, full of possibility. In 1914 he set out with 30 porters on foot and by canoe to find a place to call home. Today, after many a long dramatic and often tragic story, brilliantly (if somewhat controversially) told by Christina Lamb in The Africa House , it is being lived in by Gore-Browne’s grandson, Charlie Harvey, his wife Jo and their two children. They have four to five rooms (a few with ensuite bathrooms) but the great charm of staying there is that you live with them, eat with them, listen to their stories and learn what it takes to survive deep in the remote African bush and how they are accommodating the new Africa that is fast emerging. This is not a wildlife experience (though there is the sitatunga to search out from a hide over the swampy grasslands) – more an emotional, historical, cuff Links, unforgettable journey into the very recent past and an insight into a very complex present.

But this is still just to touch a fraction of the really wild and remote places that are still to be found in Zambia. If you can, I would recommend a little detour, on your way back to Lusaka, to the Busanga Plains in Kafue National Park, which are strictly speaking in southern Zambia, but it’s worth it because it’s not a long hop by plane and you arrive in an unspoiled wilderness, much the size of Wales, of open plains, flood plains, swamps and woodland. Until Wilderness Safaris opened a few very small, beautifully inconspicuous camps there, there was almost nowhere to stay. Now it can be seen and experienced in comfort. Because it’s been so little visited and still is under water for much of the year (from December to May/June) it has an unpolluted, pristine air. Over its plains roam hartebeest, red lechwe, roan and sable, blue wildebeest, eland, oribi, kudu, puku and impala as well as the more dramatic stuff, the larger mammals such as elephant, hippo, zebra, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, and – very thrilling, this – the endangered wild dog. It’s not a place to walk because the plains are so open that there isn’t enough cover and you would see little, but it is a chance to spend time in an extraordinarily remote and wild place. Today they offer balloon rides, a wonderful way to get some idea of the size and scale of the plains. It’s good to know there’s so much more to Zambia than the South Luangwa valley, much-lauded though it is.

A woman accused of stealing a substantial amount of money from an elderly family member was sentenced to 90 days in jail Thursday.

Deana L. Watkins, 45, of Reubens, entered an Alford plea in Asotin County Superior Court for first-degree theft, a class-B felony. An Alford plea means that while not admitting guilt, Watkins feels a jury would find her guilty if presented with evidence against her, bangles, Asotin County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Curt Liedkie explained. Watkins pleaded innocent to first-degree theft on May 20, and a trial was scheduled for Sept. 1.

Although Watkins has no criminal history, key rings, Judge Ray D. Lutes imposed the maximum sentence under standard range. She must also pay restitution to the victim in the amount of the money she spent. Watkins did not have anything to say to the judge prior to sentencing, but let her attorney, Richard Laws, earrings, speak for her.

"She’s maintained from the very beginning that she lacked the necessary intent to deprive Mr. Watkins permanently of anything, but she does understand how it looks and how it could look in front of a jury," Laws said.

According to court documents, while caring for 90-year-old Clarkston resident William (Murphy) Watkins, Deana Watkins spent at least $160,000 of his money in just less than two years. From January 2008 to September 2009, Murphy Watkins’ $80,000 checking account was whittled down to around $500, documents say. This included monthly deposits of $1,900 to $2,500 from Social Security and retirement and a $42,000 CD she cashed and deposited into her own account.

Liedkie said it’s difficult to tell how much money Watkins actually spent, because she didn’t keep a record of the transactions. Documents used to charge Watkins say she stole in excess of $5,000.

Watkins, who married into the family, had power of attorney over Murphy Watkins. Although the agreement was never official, lacking a doctor’s signature, the family operated as though it was.

"Her name was on the account," Liedkie said.

Her expenditures started small — withdrawals of $300, groceries or clothing — and quickly escalated. Family members believe during the two-year time period, Deana Watkins purchased a washer and dryer, a new car, two pickup trucks, watches, a riding lawn mower, tiffany, a boat, a 24-foot trailer and a 30-day trip to Texas.

She also withdrew around $30,000 for a down payment on a house that her and Murphy Watkins — who lived in a nursing home after breaking his hip — planned to share.

Sheriff’s reports indicate Murphy Watkins was "very upset" when he learned about Deana Watkins’ activities and insisted they had no agreement that allowed her to spend his money. Deana Watkins, however, told detectives they had a verbal agreement.

Roy (Skip) Watkins, Murphy Watkins’ nephew, said Murphy trusted Deana Watkins, and that trust was breached.

"I don’t think anyone realizes the emotional stress this has caused for Murph," he said in the courtroom Thursday. "He was devastated when he found out that his account was depleted to $585."

He added that despite her power of attorney, Deana Watkins did not pay many of Murphy Watkins bills, including medical and prescription insurance and numerous doctors’ bills.

"She started out in good faith by cleaning and running errands for Murph, and then it progressed to power of attorney, and then her greed became excessive and snowballed," he continued.

Following the proceedings, Roy Watkins said the family intends to file a civil suit against Deana Watkins.

A 6-year-old boy from Glenside died after being accidentally struck by his mother’s vehicle, bangles, which was parked at home,Charm pendant, Abington Township police said.

Deputy Police Chief John Livingood said the boy’s mother and his siblings had just returned home at 4:10 p.m. Thursday. The car was parked on a steep driveway, and the woman had turned off the engine and removed the key from the ignition.

She unloaded several of the children,Charm bracelet, including the boy, and was preparing to remove the others when the vehicle inexplicably rolled backward, pendants, Livingood said Friday.

The boy died from his injuries a short time later at Abington Memorial Hospital.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said her office had been notified of the accident but would take no action. She termed the boy’s death a "horrible, unimaginable, watches, tragic accident."

Livingood said the vehicle was a 1996 Chevrolet Suburban that had been inspected and appeared to be in good repair.

"We have the vehicle and are having it examined for mechanical defects," he said. "So far, we have not found any."

Livingood said the department was withholding the name of the family until all its members were notified of the boy’s death.

S. Air Force Air Education and Training Command issued the following news release:,money clips

Edgar Ibarra Jr. is a typical 8-year-old boy, who is into cars, airplanes and superheroes. He’s shy with strangers but curious as to how things work. Meeting him for the first time, it is hard to notice that Edgar has spina bifida, a neural tube defect developed while in the womb.

Little did Edgar know when he woke up on Aug. 20 that he would be spending the day at Laughlin AFB with the 85th Flying Training Squadron and become a "Pilot for a Day".

"Every time we go in or out of town, he likes to see the planes from the base. So it was real exciting for him, rings," said Edgar’s mother Angelic Martinez.

The "Pilot for a Day" program gives terminally ill or disabled children the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a pilot at Laughlin. Every "Pilot for a Day" is specially designed to meet the needs and wants of the child participating, which makes it a day like no other.

"We’ve been doing this now for about six years and every one of these is different," said Sharlene Perez, Department of State Health Services, Children with Special Health Care Needs employee.

"We tailor the program to what he would dig and not dig. Every agency on base loves to get involved. It’s been an awesome experience," said Capt. Winfield Scott, an 85th FTS, T-6 instructor pilot and coordinator for Edgar’s day.

For Edgar’s special day, he and his family had breakfast with Airmen from the 85th FTS,necklaces, watched a military working dog demonstration, took a tour of the fire department and air traffic control tower and explored a T-6 Texan II aircraft. He even received his own flight suit, cuff Links, cap, coin and spare patches from other squadrons.

Following his favorite meal, pepperoni pizza, bangles, Edgar could wait no longer; it was time for him to fly his own T-6 simulator.

"He’s been giving thumbs up all day," said Perez.

When asked how his day went, Edgar responded bashfully, "Good. Everything was good." For any query with respect to this article or any other content requirement, please contact Editor at htsyndication@hindustantimes.com

Three. Three in the past four years — in 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Exeter’s quest for a fourth — this time in the newly aligned Division I level — begins Tuesday when it hosts Hollis-Brookline.

Anna Grant, who has experienced two of those three championships, was gearing up for the season with her teammates Tuesday at an afternoon practice session.

Grant is one of nine seniors on the team, five of whom are returning seniors — Allison Wilson, key rings, Connie Boutilier, Aly George, Abby Hughes and Grant.

"We should be good," says the 17-year-old from Stratham, who made a verbal commitment to play college soccer at Siena College this past July. "We lost some good players (to graduation), but we’re pretty much the same team. We should be pretty experienced."

Their success will depend upon everyone performing their roles and coming together as a team.

"I have a feeling everyone wants to win it," says Grant. "Everyone knows what it’s like to win."

Grant said Exeter wasn’t expecting to win the championship after losing pretty much its entire starting lineup from the 2008 team. The skill and play of their younger players, however, was a huge and welcome surprise. So was the team’s chemistry.

"We played really well as a team," says Grant.

Megan Curran returns for her 10th season as the head coach.

"We have a solid core group back," says Curran. "Expectations are high."

Three of those players have played on two of those championships and will continue their soccer careers at the college level — Walker (Northeastern University), George (undecided) and Grant.

"They definitely have a taste of that (championship) experience, tiffany," says Curran.

Grant, who received Honorable Mention All-State honors last year, returns as the team’s stopper, bangles, while Walker, bracelets, who received second-team recognition for her play at sweeper,Charm bracelet, returns to that all-important position, and Abby Short, who received Honorable Mention recognition last year as a freshman, returns as a striker.

George, meanwhile, is back at center midfield, and Boutilier returns at outside back.

Michaela Janowski, meanwhile, last year’s JV goalie, is a senior this season and expects to be the starting goalie.

"There’s a lot of people fighting for spots," says Curran, noting it’s still so early in the season and they haven’t had a full team practice yet this season due to injuries.

There were five injured players sitting on the sideline on Tuesday.

"Nothing serious," says Curran, noting the injuries are minor, injuries which just require rest.

"We have a long way ahead of us," adds Curran, noting that at this point of time they’re focusing on their first game of the season, and Hollis-Brookline, which has moved up from Class I to Division I, is a very good team.

"We’ll have our hands full," says Curran.

Curran is assisted by Jillian Goldman and Steve Holmes.

The results of a monthslong investigation into the apparent suicide of his 25-year-old girlfriend inside his Henrico County apartment reached Wyatt Ward Hollar while he prepared to ship out with his National Guard unit in Mississippi.

It was July 24, 2007, and Hollar sat down to talk with veteran Henrico homicide detective Thomas Holsinger and Kevin Harver, a forensics specialist who had collected much of the evidence surrounding Danielle Wilson’s death.

They had traveled to Mississippi,Beads necklace, they said, because they wanted to be honest with the young soldier and Virginia Military Institute graduate who had been shot multiple times in Iraq; he had spent four years there working under a private contractor training police. He saw a lot of friends die, good people.

But he chuckled that he guessed some of the men who had attacked him and his fellow instructors and trainees had been recent graduates.

The conversation, which had been recorded and was played yesterday at Hollar’s second trial, grew a bit more tense.

"You’re not under arrest," Holsinger promised. "There’s no warrant or anything. But some of the results have come back that aren’t really explaining your side of the story."

Hollar listened patiently, and then Holsinger lowered the boom.

"There is no way she shot herself," Holsinger said of Wilson, bangles, who had graduated from James Madison University and planned to go to graduate school in business. "Based on my investigation and everything that I’ve learned, you did not tell us the truth. Of course, that’s not unusual in my line of work."

Holsinger pushed, necklaces, speaking of VMI’s tradition of honor and truthfulness. He said scientific evidence, watches, months of testing and test fires of a gun that Hollar said Wilson used all showed that the gunshot was fired from as far away as 3 feet, an impossible distance for the woman to have executed a self-inflicted gunshot wound to her chest.

There was gunshot residue on both of Hollar’s hands and on one of Wilson’s hands, Holsinger said.

Hollar didn’t budge under the gentle prodding of Holsinger, whose soft but urgent voice belied a dogged determination.

"I’ve told you the truth," Hollar replied. "I can’t explain what your reports say. What I told you is what happened."

He pleaded his case again and again, even when Holsinger said he should expect to be arrested on a murder charge after investigators and prosecutors took their case to a grand jury.

Hollar, then 28, was indicted and arrested in February 2008, almost a year to the day after Wilson’s death.

Yesterday, the second day of his second trial, Hollar showed the same unshakeable confidence he expressed in Mississippi almost three years ago, as a rapt jury listened to the hourlong conversation with Holsinger and an earlier voluntary discussion with the detective the morning of Wilson’s death.

Now 30, Hollar won a new trial after being convicted in October 2008 of second-degree murder and being sentenced the same night to 15 years in prison. He was taken in handcuffs from a courtroom in front of his weeping family.

But the decision was overturned when Hollar’s legal team, Cary Bowen and Susan Parrish, discovered that jurors had listened to portions of the first interrogation that weren’t played in court.

The same legal team is now counting on new forensic findings that state experts had been wrong to conclude that Wilson could not have shot herself. Prosecutors, however, have a new expert who is expected to say the original findings by the state were correct.

The trial continues this morning in Henrico Circuit Court and is expected to last through Friday.

As soon as Michelle Taylor looked in the mirror, bangles, she knew something was wrong. She now viewed the world through two narrow slits,Charm pendant, and the area beneath one of her eyes had turned blue.

But the dermatologist who had injected the filler into a hollowness under her eyelids and smoothed out fat deposits said it was just a minor matter of healing time before her skin took on a natural hue again and the swelling went down.

Two years later the discoloration and puffiness were still there.

"I’ve been pretty upset," said Taylor, who recently traveled from Montana to Las Vegas to see if a cosmetic surgeon could undo what had been done back home. "I had been wearing sunglasses even when there wasn’t any sun."

As it turned out, Dr. Shoib Myint was able to reverse the condition under her left eye, and the other eye will be done soon.

"The filler had been put in too close to the surface of the skin," Myint said recently in his office off West Sahara Avenue.

"She’s lucky that the filler that had been used was one I was able to flush out. Too often people who don’t know what they’re doing will use a filler that can’t be reversed. In rare cases I’ve seen, people have lost their vision because of the way the filler is placed."

As the number of people electing to have cosmetic procedures continues to rise across the country, the number of corrective revisions, or "redos" as they are often called, appears to be increasing at a rate that is significant enough to cause concern among medical practitioners.

"Sometimes what has been done to patients actually astounds me," said Dr. Michael Edwards, a Las Vegas plastic surgeon who is a spokesman for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. "Unfortunately, people will go out and simply price shop for surgery, and then the next thing you know they’re spending two to three times more for revision surgery."

Some 17 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States last year, but no one knows how many were redos.

While anecdotal evidence tends to support the notion that more redos are being done — top plastic and cosmetic surgeons throughout the United States believe it is — it is impossible to know an actual number, because major medical associations don’t keep statistics on revision surgery.

New York plastic surgeon Andrew Jacono , whose expertise is often sought in the most difficult facial cosmetic surgery revision cases in the country, dedicates 35 percent of his practice to surgery on patients unhappy with results delivered by other doctors.

Jacono estimates that 10 percent of cosmetic surgeries in the United States are redos.

If Jacono’s estimate is on the mark, that would mean 1.7 million revision cosmetic surgeries are done each year.

Edwards, who stressed that even the best surgeons encounter complications in their work, now devotes more than half of his practice to revision surgery, largely to breast implant procedures.

He said a number of those are necessary because implants simply wear out.

Las Vegas plastic surgeon Stephen Gordon also noted that breast implants are expected to need "maintenance" every 10 years.

It is actually very possible for a woman who gets her first breast implants in her 20s to need five more implantations in her lifetime, according to data released by implant manufacturers.

One woman who had breast implants originally done on the East Coast and who recently had revision surgery done in Las Vegas said she had wanted to do it for years but the cost had held her back.

"My nipples weren’t the same height, and one breast was firm and the other squishy," the woman said.

A woman from Canada also came to Las Vegas for a redo of her breast implants. A redo by the original surgeon still had left her unsatisfied.

"My breasts were too far under my arms, so I didn’t have any cleavage," she said.

The total cost of her three surgeries was around $20,000, she said.

Both of the breast implant revision surgery patients had their redos done by Las Vegas cosmetic surgeon Samir Pancholi.

Though they asked for anonymity because they did not want people to know they had breast augmentation work done, both women said they are now happy with their revision procedures.

"Dr. Pancholi actually listened to what I wanted," the Canadian woman said.

Pancholi, who is a spokesman for the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, said it is not uncommon for revision surgery to cost more, because "it is more difficult than the original surgery."

"Often, you have to deal with a lot of scar tissue," he said.

Myint said has no doubt that Hollywood led the surge in plastic surgery throughout the country as Americans learned through the media that many of their favorite celebrities were players in the nip-tuck world.

Celebrities also have led the charge in having second thoughts about what they have had done, he said. Not all of them can have redos.

For instance, Priscilla Presley, former wife of Elvis, admits that a fake doctor, who went to prison for his unlicensed injections on several people,Atlas charm bracelet, injected her with the same industrial silicone used for greasing automobiles. Her face now is cratered and lumpy.

"Unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done for that," Myint said. "You have to be very careful with the unscrupulous. I have had to try and work with a patient who also had industrial grade silicone injected. There was nothing I could do. I said the only thing that could be done is a full reconstruction, and I didn’t think she would be happy with the looks of that either."

Myint’s successful cosmetic facial surgery practice has earned him a spot as a regular contributor to the popular website Awfulplasticsurgery.com, which is marketed as having "the best of the worst celebrity plastic surgery."

"Let’s face it," he said. "People are interested in celebrities. I hope I can help them learn something from my input."

Myint said Angelina Jolie-inspired lip injections have resulted in far too many people taking away from their natural beauty.

On the awful plastic surgery website, pendants, he wrote about porn actress Jenna Jameson’s lip injections:

"Jenna clearly has the classic trout pout lips. She has broken the 70 percent anatomical rule. Not only are her upper lips larger than her lower lips (too aggressive augmentation with either filler or surgery near the wet/dry junction), but there is also loss of any evidence of a vermilion border. She also has no tapered look to her upper and lower lips. This sausage-like appearance indicates once again an aggressive approach along the outer corners of the lip."

Depending on the filler used, Myint said sausage lips often can be overcome.

If people are partly educated about plastic surgery by the kind of website that shares Myint’s observations, it is still difficult for the would-be patient to know which doctor’s work is the most successful.

Physicians are not required to disclose data about revisions of their work; nor do they have an incentive to do so.

Patients, well aware that they have chosen of their own free will to take part in elective procedures, are reluctant to file lawsuits that could give consumers a better sense of whose work frequently needs revision.

Taylor said most patients sign paperwork before procedures which reminds them that a good outcome is not guaranteed.

"You have to remember that beauty is subjective," she said.

A patient who recently contacted Edwards for breast implant revision surgery said no matter how much homework you do you still have to "make a leap of faith."

"Doctors will show you before and after pictures that have different lighting and might not even be their patients," said the woman, who spoke only on condition of anonymity. "Dr. Edwards looked into the background of my former doctor back East and found he was an emergency room doctor advertising himself as a cosmetic surgeon. You don’t think a doctor would lie, but they do. There’s just too much money involved. I have a hard time trusting them. They give you references of other patients, but you know they won’t give you a reference of someone they screwed up."

Dr. William Zamboni, chief of plastic surgery with the University of Nevada School of Medicine, said consumers should always check on a physician’s board certification to see if there has been formal training in plastic surgery.

A spokesman for the American Society of Plastic Surgery, Zamboni said the cases of revision plastic surgery that he handles generally involve medical tourism.

He said some Nevadans go to Mexico or Costa Rica because of price but then are dissatisfied with the results.

"Some of those surgeons are simply not qualified to do plastic surgery," Zamboni said. "And then a patient comes to me desperate for help and ends up paying double or triple what he would have paid in the first place."

Local physicians say it is important to remember that redos don’t always mean there has been a botched plastic surgery.

It is not unusual for some people to have several surgeries on the same feature — much like Michael Jackson did with his nose — as they strive to find what they believe to be the perfect look.

"If you do it too much, though, it can have serious consequences, just as it did with Michael," Gordon said. "A surgeon might want to refuse someone, but it’s hard when they know the patient is just going to go down the street and get it done."

Myint said surgeons have to constantly be on the lookout for individuals who want work done who suffer from a psychological disorder known as body dysmorphic disorder.

"No matter what you do they won’t be happy," Myint said. "Those people see flaws that do not exist."

Neither Zamboni nor Gordon said they have to do much revision surgery on the work of local plastic or cosmetic surgeons.

Gordon said the revision surgery he often does is the result of someone wanting to maintain the look they received as a result of surgery years before.

"In this economy," he said, "people aren’t getting as much new work, but they are maintaining what they have."

Zamboni said the present economy also makes it unlikely that people will go to doctors who take a few weekend courses and say they are plastic surgeons.

"As tough as times are, I think those doctors have been weeded out here," he said. "People are smart enough to want the most for their money."

That’s a far cry from 1996, when the image of plastic surgery in Las Vegas was at its nadir after 24-year-old Maria Wehr died after receiving a nose job at the office of Las Vegas plastic surgeon Alban Miller Jr.

While receiving anesthesia from Miller and an untrained assistant, she went into full respiratory arrest. Before she died, she lived for 55 days at University Medical Center in what authorities called "a chronic vegetative state.

The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners placed Miller on probation for three years and ordered him to do surgery only under the supervision of an anesthesiologist in a hospital or in an approved clinic setting.

Southern Nevadans are largely happy with cosmetic surgery done in Las Vegas, where statistics show that the most popular procedure is breast augmentation.

A 2004 local survey on health care found that plastic surgery was the only medical specialty that the majority of residents judged to be among the best in the nation.

A bartender whose breast implants were sagging with age just had her breasts redone by Pancholi. Happy with his work, she believes she knows why the local cosmetic surgery is done at a high level of expertise in Southern Nevada.

"Every woman I know has to have it in Las Vegas for her job," she said. "You’re simply not going to get tips from men if you don’t have good-size breasts for them to look at. So the plastic surgeons get a lot of practice here."

A statewide conference on "Explosion of Youth Problems–Crisis and Solutions" Wednesday, July 28, at Westminster College in Salt Lake City will feature an 11:00 AM news conference with Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, watches, Four-Star General/former U.S. Drug Czar Barry McCaffrey, necklaces, the Chairman of the nation’s largest behavioral treatment provider, CRC Health Group, Dr. Barry Karlin, and a special Introduction by Utah First Lady Jeanette Herbert. A parent and student will also speak. The public is invited at no charge (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Mental-Health.html> Mental Health).

Four-Star Gen. McCaffrey, former National Drug Policy Director, said, "This is a national crisis. More than 5 million teenagers have serious behavioral disorder issues according to the Surgeon General. At least one in five youth have a mental health disorder – 46,000 young people in Utah alone. Mental health issues can manifest into a host of behaviors including drug and alcohol abuse which is growing at an alarming rate. Utah’s treatment gap for drug and alcohol abuse among all ages is 178,000; only 15,000 receive treatment. Almost 100,bangles,000 Utah youth 12-25 need but do not receive treatment."

Dr. Barry Karlin, the Chairman and CEO of CRC Health Group, the country’s largest behavioral treatment organization with 145 facilities, including nine in Utah specializing in helping troubled youth, said, "The conference will create greater awareness of the explosion of problems facing young people today. We’re bringing together clinical experts, providers, parents, families, local government, safety leaders, and the public to discuss the range of co-occurring issues affecting youth including drugs, depression, bracelets, bullying, runaways, unemployment, finances, and behavior and thoughts threatening health and life. We want more people aware of the importance of treatment and prevention."

Attorney General Shurtleff has had personal family experience with serious youth problems and the benefits of treatment and family involvement, and the First Lady has been an advocate and leader of many effective programs assisting troubled youth.

>From 10-11 AM, there will be a display, also open to the media, of ways to deal with problems, and solutions and programs that can be utilized. Following the 11 AM news conference, media is invited to join the experts and attendees at an informal lunch at noon.

The conference is organized by CRC Health Group and its subsidiary Aspen Education Group which specializes in treatment of troubled youth. Other behavioral leaders participating include Dr. Rick Meeves, Executive Director, Outback Therapeutic Expeditions; Liz Zentner, Utah PTA Health Commissioner; and the Utah Department of Human Services; the Addiction Recovery Program and Health Support Services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and many other experts and leaders.
