"Blood samples were obtained from the cubital veins of the participants under a fasting condition. A Hitachi 7600 Automatic Biochemistry Analyzer was used to determine the serum levels. The cut-off points of reference values were the 75th and 95th percentiles for total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) while the 25th and 5th percentiles were used for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations. The highest 95th percentiles of TC among the four groups were 5.34 mmol/L for boys and 5.11 mmol/L for girls. Compared with those of boys, female TG levels were obviously higher in the 10-14-year-old group (P < 0.05) and HDL-C levels were significantly higher in the 15-18-year-old group (P < 0.05). The serum TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C all peaked during the 6-9-year-old period and then declined during the adolescent stage. Also, the serum TG continuously increased with a relative plateau during the 6-14-year-old period. Obese and overweight children had higher TG and LDL-C levels but lower HDL-C levels," wrote Z. The researchers concluded: "This study showed a picture of the serum lipids distribution in Chinese children and found that their TC levels were lower than those of children in Japan, Iran, and France, but were higher than those of Italian children."

"We prospectively randomized 25 girls and 12 boys with an average age of 7.6 years (range 4 to 12) into the test (active treatment) or sham (superficial scapular electrical stimulation) group. A total of 20 sessions, 20 minutes each (10 Hz) were performed 3 times weekly. The criteria used to evaluate the rate of success were 1) self-reported cure, or significant, mild or no improvement; 2) visual analogue scale (level of success 0 to 10); 3) percent improvement; 4) modified Toronto score; and 5) maximum voided volume, average voided volume and number of voids daily based on bladder diary entries. After completion of the 20 sessions controls who were not cured underwent active treatment. A total of 21 patients in the test group and 16 in the sham group underwent treatment. Among the active treatment group 61.9% of parents reported cure. In the sham group no parent reported cure (p <0.001). Regarding visual analogue scale a score of 10 was indicated by 13 parents in the test group, while 1 parent in the sham group indicated a score of 9 (p=0.002). Additionally 100% improvement was reported by 12 parents in the test group and no parent in the sham group. Toronto score improved significantly in the test group (p <0.001) and sham group (p=0.008). However, the score was reduced more significantly in the test group compared to the sham group (p=0.011). In the test group average and maximum voided volumes showed a statistically significant increase and the number of voids daily decreased. After superficial scapular electrical stimulation 13 of the 16 patients who underwent parasacral transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation were cured," wrote P. Lordelo and colleagues, School of Medicine.

The researchers concluded: "This is the first known randomized clinical trial to demonstrate that parasacral transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is effective in the treatment of children with overactive bladder."

Far from the coverlets that our grandmothers assembled from scraps of leftover fabric, the 47 quilts on display in the latest exhibit to open at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art show the full spectrum of contemporary quilt-making techniques expressed in styles that range from impressionistic to abstract.

In fact, many of the contemporary works in "Rooted in Tradition: Art Quilts from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum" dramatically advance what can be done with the traditional quilt elements of surface, layers and stitching.

These quilts use hand-dyed and hand-painted fabrics, appliques, nontraditional batting and other exotic embellishments, often in eye-dazzling colors, with some even incorporating computer-generated imagery.

Altogether, this collection, drawn from the permanent collection of the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, shows the growth of the art-quilt movement from traditionally based quilts, such as Marilyn Chaffee’s "Tetrad I," made in the 1980s, to the newest art quilts that employ computer technology and digital printing.

Organized by decade, the exhibit is broken into three sections: Art Quilts of the 1980s: Rooted in Tradition; Art Quilts of the 1990s: The Watershed Years; and Art Quilts of the 2000s: Continuing the Tradition.

Even with the revolution in surface design and technology,Tiffany Sets, much stays the same in the basic construction of art quilts. Most are still sewn, either by hand or machine. And many rely on the time-honored design of the repeated block.

For example, in the works from the 1980s section, many inventive pieces, such as Therese May’s hand-painted abstract "Basket" (1988), hang alongside more traditional design-oriented works like Chaffee’s "Tetrad I" (1981), which incorporates machine-pieced patterns that the artist hand quilted.

These works are exemplary for their use of new techniques being developed at the time, especially because fabric printers were beginning to develop new lines of fabric designed especially for quilts and important how-to books on quiltmaking were being published, most notably by Jean Ray Laury and Michael James, two artists included in this collection.

Then, as now, art quilts are still constructed in three layers:

– A front or top;

– A middle, which can be batting,Tiffany Money Clips, canvas, flannel or some other material;

– And a backing or lining.

These layers are held together by stitching or other devices — grommets, pins, staples, tacks, beads, buttons, etc.

By the 1990s, it was often impossible to distinguish the traditional block form in a quilt any longer; sometimes it disappeared altogether.

Two pieces in the 1990s section — Diana Bunnell’s "Sewing Down the Bones" (1993) and Sally Sellers’ "Volume One" (1995) — may seem far from traditional, even though they are basically constructed in the same way as all quilts. As wild and abstract as they are, they offer evidence as to why people who made quilts during that decade were no longer calling themselves "quilters," but "artists."

Art quilts being made in the current decade reflect both tradition and innovation. For example, works in the 2000s section incorporate the most diverse of quilting materials. Whereas most quilters were once rigidly limited to only 100-percent cotton, silk or wool, now anything was possible to use in art quilts — netting, fiberglass, screening, rayon, even polyester.

Sandra Woock’s "Eclipse" (2001), for example,Tiffany pendants, appears as if a painting, but instead is made of hand-dyed fabrics that are machine-pieced and quilted. And Phil D. Jones’ "Red Rover" (2003) looks every bit like an impressionist painting, even though it is machine quilted with rayon, metallic and monofilament threads.

It’s worth noting that all of the artists represented in this exhibition are still working in the field. This continuing support and passion of the artists pushes the mainstream art museum and gallery community to take notice. These artists are the inspiration,Tiffany earrings, guides and mentors for a whole new generation of artists. They have helped shape and change a powerful traditional medium into a truly new art form.

He called from Afghanistan last week and asked his parents to send him some of his old art supplies. He said the stark beauty of the central Asian country had inspired him to draw again.

"The irony is, here you have a kid who was as tough as anything, who was a Reconnaissance Marine, but he could stop for a moment and see the beauty of the people and the land around him, and there’s something so poignant about that," said his aunt,Tiffany Watches, Amanda Brock. "You know, he lost his life in that beauty."

The 23-year-old Marine lance corporal from Spring died during combat operations in Afghanistan’s Helmand province on Thursday. He was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, based at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Marine officials said Martin was driving a light armored vehicle on patrol when a roadside bomb exploded and the vehicle flipped. Martin died of head trauma.

"I know he went there with the idea of helping the Afghani people — I know that in my heart — but also to be a good and loyal and helpful Marine to his own team members," said his uncle, Robert Brock.

Martin was born in Durban, South Africa, and moved to the Houston area when he was 12.

He attended Spring’s Klein Collins High School, where he was in the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.

"He was known at Klein Collins as the one who would stand up for people who were being bullied," said his mother, Debora Wallace. She remembered one of the school administrators pulling her aside during her son’s senior year. "He said, ‘When Shane graduates from high school, what are we going to do?’ He protected so many people at school, the small kids, and the underdogs."

Martin was fiercely protective by nature, but even-tempered and mature beyond his years, said his father, Kevin Wallace.

"He had a demeanor where he would never get angry at another person, no matter what they did to him," Wallace said. "He would just move on and keep it inside."

Martin met his future wife at an architectural graphics class at Klein Collins. The pair became best friends, and she invited him to senior prom because she had an extra ticket. Ten days later, they were officially dating.

"We would finish each other’s sentences, literally," Lauren Martin said by telephone from California,Tiffany earrings, where she lived with her husband. "We always knew what each other was thinking, and we had the same values. My grandmother told me true soulmates would complement each other, and we did."

After graduation from Klein Collins in 2005, Martin attended The Art Institute of Houston before deciding to follow his heart to the Marines. His father, grandfather and uncle had all served, and Martin had always been a military history buff.

"Shane only ever watched the History Channel, or the Military Channel," his mother recalled. "When we were in South Africa, it was black-and-white war movies."

She said her son had a knack for remembering birthdays and anniversaries by connecting them to dates of World War II battles.

"He really and truly would have liked to be a military history professor once his days of serving were done," she said.

Boot camp and a bride

On Leap Day in February 2008, Martin celebrated his graduation from Marine boot camp. A few months later, he proposed to Lauren when she came to visit at Pendleton.

"It was nothing fancy," Lauren said. "We had no money. We were in a hotel room, watching a Dane Cook DVD, and he said, ‘I’ll be right back,’ and tripped over some clothes."

Then he gave her the ring.

"He told me that I was the moment, and that’s why he did it right then," Lauren said. "That we were just sitting there together and that being there with me was all that he cared about, that I was the moment, and it couldn’t be any better."

Last visit home in April

The couple married on July 4, 2008, in Lauren’s backyard in Spring. In December of the same year, Martin deployed to Iraq for his first combat tour.

He earned his citizenship during that deployment. The naturalization ceremony was held at one of Saddam Hussein’s former palaces.

"He was very, very proud of that," Martin’s uncle said.

Before he deployed to Afghanistan in May, Martin visited Houston for two weeks in April to say goodbye to friends and family, including his brother, Kyle, 21,Tiffany Money Clips, and sister,Tiffany bracelets, Diane, 14. They ate Chinese food and went shopping at the Galleria.

Diane said she was in the process of writing her big brother a three-page letter when her family learned of his death.

"I never finished it," she said. "It was telling him to be safe and everything, so everybody could sleep. And I never got to send the letter."

In addition to his wife, parents, brother and sister, Martin is survived by grandmothers Pamela Martin and Althea Wallace. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Over 100,000 capsules of tramadol worth of over 125,000 dollars were confiscated during the search.

Police busted two drug trafficking rings and confiscated amphetamine and hashish worth 50,000 dollars, UNIAN at 1627 gmt on 26 July quoted the public relations centre of the Interior Ministry’s main directorate in Zhyromyr Region as saying.

An amphetamine seller was detained in his car near Korostyshiv, Zhytomyr Region, on 23 July during a test purchase of 1 kg of amphetamine worth 25,000 dollars on the black market. The seller was a 29-year-old company director from Kiev.

Police launched over 40 criminal cases over facts of selling illegal drugs via the Internet, UNIAN at 0933 gmt on 29 July quoted the head of the Interior Ministry’s department for fighting illegal drug distribution, Hennadiy Liskonoh, as telling journalists. Some 20 individuals face charges for selling drugs via the Internet. Liskonoh added than 2 to 3 per cent of drug sellers use the Internet for this.

In Vinnytsya Region, police detained a Moldovan citizen wanted by Interpol who fled from prison and was hiding in Vinnytsya Region, UNIAN at 1437 gmt on 26 July quoted an officer of the Vinnytsya sector of the Interpol Ukrainian office, Vasyl Pankevych,tiffany, as saying.

The 50-year-old man was detained as a shop robbery suspect in the Rovets village, Vinnytsya District. Police established that the man had seven convictions in Moldova, Ukraine and Russia and has been hiding since 2003.

Over 40,000 bushes of poppy and hemp were found during the Poppy 2010 national operation in Poltava Region, UNIAN at 0834 gmt on 26 July quoted the public relations centre of the Interior Ministry’s main directorate in Poltava Region as saying.

The total cost of the found poppy and hemp was almost 50,000 dollars. Over 50 drug dealers who looked after the fields were detained.

In Crimea, police found some 15,000 bushes of hemp during the Poppy 2010 operation, UNIAN at 1048 gmt on 30 July quoted the press service of the Interior Ministry’s main directorate in Crimea.

A 10 ha field of wild hemp was found on 28 July. The estimated price of the hemp would have been 5m dollars, UNIAN said.

A total of 28 drug dens were busted in Sevastopol in 2010, UNIAN at 1252 gmt on 30 July quoted the head of the department for fighting illegal drug distribution of the Interior Ministry’s directorate in Sevastopol, Oleksandr Poddubov, as telling a briefing.

Maybe the reaction reflects the strong language that Bullard, president of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, used to describe the risk of a sustained drop in the price level. Or maybe the sluggish economy has made Americans hypersensitive to such danger.

Friday’s report on the gross domestic product certainly did nothing to dispel the fears. The Commerce Department said GDP growth slowed noticeably in the second quarter, and it revised some earlier figures downward. In short,Tiffany earrings, the recession was worse than we thought, and we’re coming out of it more slowly than everyone had expected.

Bullard, in an academic-type paper published Thursday, discussed the risk that the U.S. will wind up like Japan, which has been battling deflation for more than a decade. He says we are "closer to a Japanese-style outcome today than at any time in recent history."

He also thinks the Federal Reserve should be trying to prevent that outcome. He suggests that the Fed stop talking about an "extended period" of low interest rates and instead consider reviving its quantitative easing program.

Such deflationary psychology is hard to reverse once it gets started. Therefore, Bullard and others argue, we should do everything possible to keep it at bay.

Scott Colbert,Tiffany Money Clips, head of fixed-income investments at Commerce Trust Co. in Clayton, thinks Bullard is right to worry about deflation. Debt-laden consumers, he says, will be tightening their belts for years or even decades.

"It (deflation) has a higher probability than the new inflationary spiral that other people are talking about," Colbert says. "There’s no one right answer, but it is probably going to take some more monetary stimulus and more nontraditional measures to convince people that the Fed is not going to allow asset prices to fall."

Among economy watchers, there’s a wide range of opinion on how ominous the deflation threat is. Most, though, are glad to see a central banker raising the alarm.

"We think the economy is just going through a normal slowdown after a first year of recovery," says Gary Thayer, chief macro strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors. "We don’t think deflation is the most likely scenario, and we think the Federal Reserve still has policy options to prevent it."

"Anytime you have debt going bump in the night, deflation is a threat," says Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at New York investment firm BlackRock. "It looms, the Fed needs to know what to do if we go there, but I don’t think we are going there yet."

One thing’s for sure: We don’t want to end up like Japan, which has been unable to shake the deflation that set in after its stock-market and real-estate bubbles burst in the 1990s. If Bullard, who has spent his career building a reputation as an inflation fighter, is worried about deflation,Tiffany necklaces, the rest of us should worry, too.
