Monache girls’ tennis coach Gary Perez doesn’t quite know what to make of his team’s 9-9 tie against Tulare Western, Monday night.

“It was one of the strangest matches I’ve ever seen,” Perez said. “I’m still trying to figure it out myself.”

The Marauders were on the verge of getting routed after the first round, falling behind 5-1 with No. 1 singles player Jasmine Martinez getting the lone win.

In round two, however, Monache roared back in the form of a valentines day jewelry 5-1 second round.

Nothing was settled, though, as the Mustangs and Marauders (6-4-1, 2-0-1 EYL) split 3-3 in round three.

Martinez started off the round-two resurgence with a convincing 6-0 victory over Mustang No. 1 player Brooke Hillman.

“Jasmine controlled the match,” Perez said. “She moved Brooke around real well and finished points when she had opportunities.”

No. 2 singles player Kellie Agtarap spotted her opponent a 5-1 lead but rallied to win 7-6 (7-5) in a tiebreaker.

Monche’s No. 1 doubles team of Tiffany Camat and Allie Mejia beat Western best team 6-4 after losing to the No. 2 team in round one.

Monache’s No. 3 doubles team (Shannon Cruess and Andrea Ruiz), however, did vanquish the same Western No. 2 team that got the best of veterans Mejia and Camat.

Go figure.

The third round saw Western sweep singles play and Monache sweep Valentine’s Day gift doubles.

Down 9-8, Karli Miller and Mercedes Alcantar were able to preserve the draw, winning their match 7-6 (7-5) just as the darkness was beginning to impair the players’ vision.

Perez was pleased at how his team came back, but would like to see them play that way throughout.

“What it gets down to is consistency and we’re just not playing with it,” he said.

At the Clovis Tournament over the weekend, Monache went 3-3, beating Sacramento squads Roseville and Pioneer while losing to Napa High School, Bakersfield and Bullard.

Martinez, however, went 5-1 in her six matches valentines jewelry the Clovis field.

Cruess and Ruiz went 3-3 in the tourney.

Monache returns to the court, Wednesday, against Cesar Chavez.
