In a major breakthrough,tiffany rings, the police on Thursday arrested a 19-year-old youth in connection with the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl. However, the authorities have ruled out his role in the rape and murder of two other girls.

Javed Shaikh, an employee of a cable operator in Kurla, was picked up after his DNA matched that of the samples found in the nails of the nine-year-old victim, whose body was found in an abandoned hut in June. A local court remanded him to 14 days’ police custody.

Residents in the central Mumbai suburb of Kurla have been living in fear over the past few weeks, following a series of rapes and murders of young girls. Mumbai police had deployed hundreds of personnel and were carrying out a massive manhunt for the serial killer.

Sanjeev Dayal, Mumbai’s police commissioner, said Javed’s DNA matched with that of the samples found in the nails of Nusrat Shaikh,tiffany bracelets, the nine-year-old girl, whose decomposed body had been recovered from a hut in the Nehru Nagar slum colony in mid-June.

However,tiffany necklaces, his DNA did not match with those of the previous two victims, Sania Khan, the five-year-old, whose body was recovered from a building in February, and Anita Jaiswal, nine,tiffany cuff Links, whose body was found in a drain a month later.

"The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) at Kalina confirmed that Javed’s DNA matched the samples found on baby Nusrat," said Dayal. "We will continue looking for other accused responsible for the rape and murder of the other two girls."

According to Dayal, the police began taking DNA samples of scores of youth in Nehru Nagar over the past few days. It was only after the FSL gave its confirmation that the police arrested Javed.

"A lot of work needs to be done now and we will interrogate him over the next few days," said the Mumbai police chief. But Javed’s relatives claim that the youth is innocent and accuse the police of framing him]
